Textile-to-Textile Recycling Done Right Here in Newfoundland!

NLight Recycling transforms discarded clothing into usable raw materials, keeping textiles in circulation and out of landfills. By developing local textile-to-textile recycling processes in Newfoundland & Labrador, we reduce waste, recover valuable fibres, and build the foundation for a circular textile economy, right where the problem exists.

Our Vision

We envision a circular textile system where materials remain in use for as long as possible and waste is designed out of the system. In this future, discarded clothing is not an endpoint, but a feedstock for new production.

Our vision is rooted in the belief that circular solutions must be local to be effective. By building textile-to-textile recycling capacity in Newfoundland & Labrador, we aim to reduce landfill pressure, lower environmental impact, and recover valuable fibres that would otherwise be lost.

Through careful process development, collaboration, and responsible operations, NLight seeks to contribute to a more sustainable materials economy, one that aligns environmental stewardship with long-term social and economic benefits.

Pilot Project

NLight’s pilot project is the first step toward establishing textile-to-textile recycling infrastructure in Newfoundland & Labrador. The project focuses on developing and testing a small-scale, multi-phased, locally appropriate process for handling post-consumer textile waste.

The pilot involves practical evaluation of collection, sorting, and pre-treatment steps such as cleaning, cutting, shredding, and fibre opening. By working with real textile waste streams, NLight aims to understand material composition, contamination, and process performance under local conditions.

This pilot phase allows NLight to refine workflows, generate technical insight, and identify challenges before scaling. The outcomes will inform future infrastructure development and support the creation of a viable, long-term textile recycling system not just for the province, but for the entirety of Canada.

NLight Recycling’s Mission: Rethinking Textile Waste in Newfoundland & Labrador

Fri Apr 03 2026 The fashion industry produces millions of tons of textile waste every year, yet less than one percent is recycled back into new clothing. This broken system is fueling pollution on a massive scale, making textile-to-textile recycling not just an innovation but a necessity in Canada.

The Issue of Textile Pollution

Fri Feb 27 2026 In this post, we will explore, in some depth, many failures of the textile industry around the world, and in particular in Canada to stop its contributions to the climate crisis. We will also discuss the thought process that delivered us to choose this problem and solution to reduce global GHG emissions.
